August 2002

Monday August 19 - Reno, Nevada
Jill and I arrived safely here in Reno for the Reno Tahoe Open. It is played at the same venue as last year, Montreux Golf and Country Club. Last year, although we really enjoyed our time here, it wasn’t as much fun on the course as I missed the cut. My game feels good on the range and I am ready to play after a couple of weeks off. Following Reno I will play both Canadian events and then possibly Pennsylvania, depending on how I do in the next few weeks! I am working with my new trainer this week, Dennis and I have no doubt he will be bending me in to shape after a few weeks of wedding excesses! We are staying at a nice hotel this week and they kindly upgraded us as we are sort of on our honeymoon. We plan on having dinner downstairs in the Italian (yes, the same one we ate at every night last year!) and then an early night. We were up at 4am this morning to catch our flight. Bye for now, Per

Tuesday August 20 - Reno, Nevada
I have worked hard with new coach Dennis Sheehy over the last couple of days and my game feels good. The tee times are out and I am playing in the afternoon on Thursday at 12.41 with JL Lewis from Texas and Greg Chalmers from Australia. On Friday I have an early time of 07.11. I guess an early night on Thursday. Remember you can follow the scores on PGATOUR.com. Catch up later after the round, Per

Thursday August 22 - Reno-Tahoe Open, 1st Round, 69 ( -3)
I played well today and should have scored lower, but after a couple of weeks off I am reasonably happy. I made two mistakes today on 18 (my 9th). - I only had a sand wedge left to the pin and made a bogey. On my 17th hole, a par 4, I hit my tee shot right and hit his second one into the water. I almost salvaged a bogey but missed a 4-5 footer. Well, at least that is my double out of the way for the week! After play I warmed down and then Jill and I headed back to the hotel and had room service. I have an early start on Friday and hope to follow my 69 with another good score, Catch up then, Per

Friday August 23, Reno-Tahoe Open, 2nd Round 73( +1)
We got up at 4 am this morning. It's not often you see a full moon on the way to the course - then you know you are up early! It was cold but warmed up later on. I played great the first few holes but missed every putt by a inch. As the round progressed I started to miss some fairways and was working hard to save pars. Over all the game feels really good so I’m looking forward to the weekend - Let's hope for a pair of 65s. Gotta run, Per

Saturday August 24, Reno-Tahoe Open, 3rd Round 78( +6)
Well, it started so well and ended so bad. I played with Bob May, (who is a really nice guy) today and together we birdied the first 4 holes. I went over the green on the 7th and the ball landed in a ladies hand. (I’m not sure if it was a diving catch up it just bounced there!) I got a free drop – (well it’s not an easy shot from someones hand!) but hit a bad chip and doubled the hole. The eighth is one of the hardest holes on the course and unfortunately we had a long wait as someone from the group in front went OB and had to come back to hit another. I eventually hit a great tee shot but missed the green and made bogey. I know it sounds crazy but I really didn’t play that badly. When I was done I just looked at Jill and said "What happened?" I couldn't believe it. The goal is to finish at least even tomorrow, so I need to shoot 68. After that we will catch the charter flight up to Canada with the other players and caddies. We enjoy it up there so hopefully a better week is on the cards. After practicing Jill and I headed out for dinner with Heather and Charles Howell. Time for a glass of red wine!, Per

Wednesday August 27 - Vancouver
What a great city this is! Whilst I played in the pro-am today and got a feel for the course, Jill had fun with the girls. She flew out on a sea plane to Saturna Island to a winery. She said it was amazing and coupled with the beautiful weather she had a great day. I'm looking forward to the week - we are staying with the Parneviks about 30 minutes from the course. I'll catch up with you after the round, Per

Thursday August 28 - Air Canada Championship, 1st Round, 68 (-3)
A solid start to the week posting a 68. I started from the first and was off to a poor start with an early bogey at the third. My game improved after that and a pair of twos on 9 and 11 gave me some confidence. With another couple of birdies on 7 and 12 it was a satisfactory day.The par at the course this week is 71 and with scoring in the mid 60s by the leaders today it is going to be a low week! I am well placed in the top 20 and hope to keep writing about rounds in the 60s this week - that's what it will take to feature on the top of the leaderboard. An early start on Friday so dinner at home with the Parneviks and an early night. Bye for now, Per

Friday August 29 - Air Canada Championship, 2nd Round, 69 (-2)
Another good round and as long as I keep breaking 70 I will be in good shape. Starting from the 10th today I was off to a quick start with birdies at 12 and 13. I was going along nicely before an awful triple bogey at the par 3 16th. I hit straight back with a birdie at the 17th to be out in 35. I made a bogey on one before getting it together with three birdies in the last 8 holes to shoot 69. This will put me in the top twenty and in good position going into the weekend and only 5 back from the leaders. Thanks for all the emails - keep them coming - Catch up tomorrow, Per

Saturday August 31 - Air Canada Championship, 3rd Round, 69 (-2)
I was out in 36 and back in 33 today for another 69. I played well on the back nine and made a great par at 18 to make dinner tonight taste good. I hit my tee shot in the rough and the ball was so far down I could hardly see it. It was all I could do to chip it out on to the fairway. From there I hit a good third and made a 12 footer for par. Once again the birdie column was in the positive with five, including a pair of twos at 11 and 16. I hope to keep up the record of breaking 70 each day and if I do that I will finish well up there. Jill and I will stay for dinner in Vancouver after the event and then head to Toronto on Monday for the next PGA TOUR stop. I'll catch up with you all after the round, Per
